Ostara is finally around the corner, arriving on March 20th, and while the UK weather hasn’t quite caught up yet (more sun, please!), the promise of longer days and warmer light is enough to lift the spirit.
Ostara celebrates the Spring Equinox, the moment when day and night stand in perfect balance. From this point onward, the light continues to grow, making it a beautiful time to welcome fresh beginnings, new opportunities and the slow awakening of the earth.
Energetically, this sabbat invites us to pause and reflect on our own sense of balance. Where in your life do things feel aligned? Where might you need to restore a little harmony?
It’s also a powerful moment to begin planting seeds - both literally and magically - for the season ahead.
Here are a few of my favourite simple ways to celebrate Ostara at home.
Decorating an Ostara Altar
I never need much of an excuse to refresh my altar space, but Ostara is easily my favourite sabbat to decorate for.
Traditional Ostara correspondences include spring flowers, eggs, rabbits or hares, pastel colours, candles, and crystals. As a self-proclaimed pastel witch, this is definitely my season.
Ostara is traditionally considered a fire festival, so candles or a small cauldron can help represent the returning strength of the sun. Fresh spring flowers are another beautiful addition - here in the UK, daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths are easy to find around this time of year.
Some people love filling their altar with painted eggs or spring animals, but I personally keep things quite simple. Mine usually holds a few candles, crystals, and small dishes for herbal offerings.

Working with Ostara Herbs
Herbs are one of my favourite ways to bring seasonal energy into everyday rituals.
Some herbs traditionally associated with Ostara include :
-
Lemon balm
-
Lavender
-
Dill
-
Rose
-
Mint
Together, these herbs create a wonderful blend for attraction, abundance, home blessings, and love magic.
Around the equinox I love using them in simple ways such as :
-
simmer pots
-
dressing ritual candles
-
creating a seasonal salt bowl
-
adding them to incense blends
These small touches bring the energy of the season right into your home.
A Little Witchy Spring Cleaning
If you’ve been feeling the urge to tidy or refresh your space lately, that’s very much in tune with the energy of the Spring Equinox. Spring cleaning isn’t just practical, it’s also easily turned magical.
To welcome new opportunities, we first have to create space by releasing what’s no longer needed. That might look like :
-
deep cleaning your home
-
rearranging furniture to shift stagnant energy
-
donating or clearing out items you no longer use
Even small changes can help move energy and invite in something new.

Planting Seeds for the Season Ahead
One of my favourite Ostara rituals is planting seeds with intention.
If you have a garden, this is a wonderful time to start planting. But if not, a window box or even a small potted plant works just as beautifully.
As you place the seeds into the soil, take a moment to focus on what you want to grow in your life over the coming months - whether that’s creativity, abundance, confidence, or new opportunities.
As your plant grows, it becomes a quiet reminder of the intentions you planted alongside it.
The Chocolate Egg Manifestation Ritual
This might just be my favourite Ostara tradition - and it’s deliciously simple.
Buy 12 small chocolate eggs, one for each month of the year. As you eat each one, pause and visualise how you want that month to feel.
Think about the energy you want to carry through the year ahead (joy, success, peace, creativity) and allow yourself to fully imagine it as if it’s already unfolding.

Simple Ostara Altar Additions
If you’re creating a seasonal altar, here are a few other lovely touches to include:
-
Pastel candles or decorations (yellow, green, white, or soft spring tones)
-
Crystals like rose quartz, amethyst, aquamarine, moonstone, or clear quartz
-
Spring flowers such as hyacinths, tulips, and daffodils
-
A seasonal salt bowl with herbs like chamomile, lavender, bay leaves, and dried orange slices
-
Incense or smoke bundles with herbs like lavender, rose, or cinnamon
-
Seasonal foods such as honey, baked goods, or cinnamon rolls for abundance
Cooking or baking is actually one of the simplest ways to honour a sabbat.
Ostara is a reminder that growth doesn’t need to be rushed. The earth is slowly waking up, the light is returning and new possibilities are quietly taking root beneath the surface.
However you choose to celebrate, may this equinox bring you renewal, balance, and the promise of new beginnings.
Blessed Ostara 🌸
